September Pictures

Now that I'm kinda on Thanksgiving "break" I can catch up on the blog. For the most part, we've been taking it easy since September. Here's a recap of what GP5 was up to back in September. 

September 11, 2016- We attended the "Fiestas Patrias" parade in Aurora. The parade celebrates the Mexican Independence Day. Several of my students participated in the parade. The kids love parades so it was a good outing for them. When Gavin saw the floats (and all of the Mexican flags), he asked me if the parade was only celebrating Mexico or if there was going to be a Puerto Rico float. :)

The Grand Marshal was a colleague of ours at AU. She's the Director of Latino Initiatives. 

 This little dog on a motorized skateboard stole the show. His owner was behind him with the remote control driving him and the dog was as cool as could be.

September: "Food & Wine Festival" at home 

For the past few years, going to Epcot's Food & Wine festival has been a GP5 tradition. This year, grandma Guittar sent us the Epcot food passports so we could see what each country was offering. We decided to host a mini food & wine festival where I would try to recreate some of the dishes and the kids could get their passport stamps as they tried each meal. 

I prepared a few full meals and then a few side dishes for a few countries. As it was, it was a lot of work but the kids ate so well. The multiple course meals was a good motivator for them to eat, so they could get their sticker on the passport. 

The kids decorated the table.

First course (and the favorite by far): The Caribbean (Cuba). Rice, black beans, mojo pork with pickled red onions.

 Second and Third course:  Chili Shrimp (Australia), Quinoa with mushrooms (Morocco??)

We also had Miyasaki sweet potatoes to represent Japan (my fav but no one else's), tacos (Mexico), cheese soup (Canada), and for dessert, we had homemade pineapple "Dole whip" like at the Polynesian Resort. The dessert was the 2nd favorite for the kids.
